Dry Needling
Dry needling is an effective treatment method for muscle pain and myofascial problems ranging from mild stiffness to intense pain that can interfere with daily activities. Treatment focuses on relieving pain by inserting thin needles into specific trigger points or knots in the muscles. This can provide immediate relief from muscle tension and promotes healing.

Frequently asked questions about dry needling
Do you have questions about dry needling and the treatments? Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions.
How does dry needling work at Helix Physical Therapy?
Muscles have the ability to tighten and relax. However, with continued tightening, acidosis and pain can occur. Sometimes a small part of a muscle stays tightened while the rest relaxes, leading to a palpable strand or cable in the muscle; this is known as a trigger point.
Dry needling uses very fine needles that are placed directly into these trigger points. This approach causes a brief muscle twitch or spasm, which helps the muscle relax. This technique is extremely effective for reaching and treating deep muscles that are difficult to access with other techniques. Dry needling is often used in patients with sports-related muscle pain and with persistent muscle tension caused, for example, by prolonged incorrect posture or chronic stress.
What problems does dry needling treat?
Dry needling is effective for treating various types of muscle pain and spasms, including:
- Chronic back pain and neck pain
- Tension headaches and dizziness
- Muscle strains and injuries
- Tennis elbow and other overuse injuries
This treatment technique can also help improve mobility and reduce stiffness in involved muscle groups.
What can you expect during a dry needling treatment at Helix Physical Therapy?
During dry needling treatment, you may experience a rapid muscle contraction, also known as a muscle twitch, the moment the needle hits the trigger point. This feeling of a brief cramp quickly disappears. It involves the piece of muscle that was too tense, which tightens briefly and then relaxes. After this reaction, this part of the muscle functions normally again, without causing further symptoms.
Many patients notice significant relief of symptoms immediately after treatment. Continued improvement is often the result of additional sessions. In some cases, additional practice may be necessary for lasting results.
Is dry needling covered by health insurance?
Dry needling is part of regular physical therapy care and is therefore reimbursed by your health insurance company from your supplemental physical therapy package.
