Frequently asked questions about back pain

Do you have questions about back pain and its treatments? Find answers to frequently asked questions here.

Back pain often has multiple causes and is usually short-lived, with the pain disappearing spontaneously. Back pain often arises from a sudden increase in physical strain. Think of someone who rarely lifts heavy things but then spends four hours helping with a move. Or when you start exercising again after a winter break, or after a few hours of gardening when you normally never stand bent over for that long.

Changes in workload or work posture, such as an increase in work hours, can also trigger back pain. Back pain can also result from physical changes in the body itself or from an accident.

We carefully examine the cause of your back pain.

The pain can originate from muscle tissue, such as from a muscle strain during exercise or lifting, or as tension pain from prolonged work postures or stress.

Sometimes the pain originates in the joints of the back, which can restrict movement and cause stiffness. This may be due to irritation from heavy loading, osteoarthritis, an accident or inactivity.

Pain can also come from the intervertebral discs, as in disc bulging, a herniated disc, a herniated disc sequester, or discitis (an inflamed intervertebral disc).

In some cases, the symptoms pinch the nerves, which can cause radiation to the legs, tingling, decreased leg control, loss of strength or loss of sensation. The nerve can become pinched in the back or anywhere else in your body. Examples include a herniated disc, canal stenosis or peripheral nerve entrapment.

Lifestyle factors such as work, sleep patterns, physical strain and exercise, as well as stress, emotions, fluid intake, diet and smoking also have a major impact on your physical condition and thus on your back pain.

It is essential that we analyze the causes and influencing factors together to determine the most effective treatment.

For persistent back pain, we recommend that you make an appointment with a back specialist at Helix Physical Therapy. We carefully tailor the treatment plan to the combination of factors causing your pain. Treatment consists of a mix of mobility training, strength training, core-stability training, graded activity and graded exposure, supplemented as necessary with techniques such as dry needling.

Helix Physical Therapy has agreements with all major insurers. This means that your treatments will be fully reimbursed by your health insurance company, provided you have supplementary insurance. Here you do need to take into account how many treatments you have insured.

Care after operations such as hernia surgery come under basic insurance. Our therapists will be happy to explain how this works.

Pain in upper back

Upper back pain is often characterized as a nagging or cutting sensation in the upper back, neck and shoulder region. This pain can cause stiffness, making it difficult to fully move your chest and shoulders. Moving the shoulders can cause pain in the upper back and neck muscles, and sometimes leads to headaches, dizziness and nausea. In addition, pain in the upper back and neck can radiate to the shoulder blades and upper or lower arms.

Pain in the upper back is common in people who spend a lot of time at a desk or computer, practicing overhead sports, during heavy lifting, or during periods of emotional stress or suboptimal work postures.

Pain in middle back

Back pain in the mid-back often manifests as painful stabbing, stiffness or a nagging, faint pressure near the lower part of your chest, around the diaphragm. Turning your body or taking deep breaths can be painful, often because both your mid-back and the attached ribs are experiencing problems.

Pain in the middle back often occurs after a fall on the chest, prolonged illness with a lot of coughing, straining at heavy objects, excessive exercise or persistent work in a less than ideal position.

Pain in lower back

Pain in the lower back varies greatly. It can extend over a large area or concentrate on a small, stabbing point. The pain may be nagging or consist of sharp stabs that feel as if you are “going through your back. These symptoms are often accompanied by significant stiffness.

The lower back is where the back and pelvis meet, an area where many forces converge. Often complaints radiate from the lower back to the buttocks, upper legs and lower legs.

The causes of lower back pain are varied, including problems with muscles, joints and intervertebral discs, stenosis, herniated discs and nerve pain. Such complaints often arise with heavy physical or one-sided work, a lot of sitting at desk work or computer work without much movement.

Back pain also often occurs during periods of considerable stress or emotion, prolonged overexertion without adequate relaxation, poor sleep (such as when caring for young children), and unhealthy lifestyle habits, such as not exercising, smoking, excessive drinking and unhealthy eating.
