Frequently asked questions about shoulder pain

Do you have questions about shoulder pain and treatments? Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions.

Shoulder pain can have multiple causes and vary in duration, with pain sometimes disappearing spontaneously. Shoulder problems often arise from a sudden increase in physical strain, such as unusual movements during sports or lifting heavy things. Adjustments in work activities or incorrect sleeping positions can also trigger shoulder pain. In addition, physical changes in the body itself or an accident can cause shoulder pain.

We accurately determine the cause of shoulder pain. The pain can originate in the muscle tissue, such as from a muscle strain during sports or lifting, or as tension pain from prolonged work postures or stress.

Sometimes the pain originates in the shoulder joints, which can restrict movement and cause stiffness. This may be due to irritation from heavy loading, osteoarthritis, an accident or inactivity.

Pain can also come from the tendons or bursas, as in tendinitis or bursitis.

In some cases, the symptoms pinch the nerves in the neck, which can cause radiation to the shoulder, arm, tingling, decreased arm control, loss of strength or loss of sensation.

Your daily habits – from work posture to sleep patterns and even your mental and emotional well-being – can all contribute to shoulder pain. At Helix Physical Therapy, we look at the whole picture to provide you with the best care.

For persistent shoulder pain, it is wise to make an appointment with a shoulder specialist at Helix Physical Therapy. We carefully tailor the treatment plan to the combination of factors causing your pain. Treatment includes a mix of targeted mobility training, strength training, stability training, graded activity and graded exposure, supplemented by techniques such as dry needling as needed.

Helix Physical Therapy has agreements with all major insurers. This means that your treatments will be fully reimbursed by the health insurance company from the supplementary insurance.

For long-term postoperative rehabilitation and frozen shoulder, there is usually reimbursement from basic insurance. In that case, you do need to consider the deductible. Your therapist will be happy to help you get this right.

Pain in the shoulder

Pain in the shoulder is often characterized as a nagging or cutting sensation that can radiate to the upper arm or neck. This pain can cause stiffness, making it difficult to fully move your arm or lift it above your head. Movement can cause pain in the shoulder muscles, and sometimes this leads to headaches or limited range of motion. Pain in the shoulder is common in people who perform repetitive movements, heavy lifting, or work in uncomfortable positions for long periods of time, such as desk work.

Pain in the Rotator Cuff

Rotator cuff pain is often experienced as a nagging, penetrating pain inside the shoulder that can make sleeping on the affected side difficult. This pain may be worse when lifting the arm or during overhead activities. The pain often worsens at specific angles during movement of the shoulder girdle. Shoulder pain due to rotator cuff disease is common in people of all ages and in activities that include overhead movements. These symptoms can be aggravated by further overuse or an acute accident that sometimes causes a tear as well.

Pain in Frozen Shoulder

Pain in a frozen shoulder is often characterized as a persistent, deep pain in the shoulder that radiates to the upper arm. This pain can cause considerable stiffness, making it extremely difficult to move the arm or perform everyday activities such as dressing or reaching for objects. Movements can cause a lot of pain and drastically limit the range of motion of the shoulder.

This condition often occurs after a period of immobilization of the shoulder, such as after injury or surgery, due to periods of increased mental or emotional stress, but can also occur for no apparent reason. We also see this complaint more often in people suffering from diabetes and heart or lung problems. Pain from a frozen shoulder sometimes makes falling asleep difficult because the pain worsens while lying down.

Treatment for a frozen shoulder focuses on restoring range of motion and reducing pain. This can be achieved through a combination of physical therapy, specific exercises, medication to reduce pain and inflammation, and sometimes an injection. Helix Physical Therapy offers targeted treatments designed to restore function and reduce pain, with a personalized approach depending on the severity and duration of symptoms.

Pain associated with bursitis

Pain from bursitis in the shoulder, also known as bursitis, is characterized by a persistent, nagging pain that can worsen with certain movements or pressure on the affected area. This condition often arises from repetitive strain or direct impact, but can also be a result of an underlying rheumatic condition. The pain is usually located around the shoulder and may radiate to nearby regions such as the arm or neck.

With bursitis, there is often swelling and redness in the affected area, and the pain may increase significantly with activities that stress the shoulder, such as lifting the arm. At night, the pain may increase, especially when lying on the affected shoulder, which can affect sleep quality.

Treatment for bursitis focuses on reducing inflammation and pain. Physical therapy plays a crucial role in recovery, with exercises aimed at improving mobility and reducing pressure on the bursa. Helix Physical Therapy provides specialized care to effectively treat this condition, with the goal of restoring normal function and reducing pain.

Biceps tendon pain

Pain in the biceps tendon often presents as a nagging pain at the front of the shoulder and may radiate down the upper arm to the elbow. This pain may worsen when lifting objects or rotating movements of the arm. It often occurs in activities that require repetitive arm lifts, such as some occupations or sports such as tennis, swimming or gymnastics.

Pain in the AC joint

Pain in the acromioclavicular (AC) joint often manifests as sharp or nagging pain at the top of the shoulder. This pain may worsen when lifting the arm or carrying heavy objects. The pain often worsens by reaching forward toward the other shoulder. Pain in the AC joint often occurs after direct blows or falls to the shoulder, or from long-term overuse in sports such as weightlifting or throwing.
