Frequently asked questions about knee and hip surgery
Do you have questions about meniscus and cruciate ligament surgery, or total knee and hip replacements? Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions.
How do these operations work?
Meniscus and cruciate ligament surgery aims to repair damaged tissues in the knee to improve stability and functionality. In cases of osteoarthritis (wear and tear), total knee and hip replacements replace the joint with an artificial joint, leading to significant pain relief and improved movement. Arthroscopy is used for both diagnosis and treatment, with small incisions (cuts) and cameras helping to view and repair the joint without major surgical procedures. Joint replacement surgeries require larger incisions and are thus considerably more invasive.
What problems do these operations treat?
These surgeries are effective for treating severe wear and tear due to osteoarthritis, acute sports injuries such as meniscus tears or cruciate ligament injuries, and complex degenerative conditions of the knee and hip that resist conservative treatments.
Preparing for your surgery
At Helix Physical Therapy, we offer pre-operative training to best prepare you for your upcoming surgery. Research shows that better physical preparation contributes to a more prosperous recovery after surgery. Thanks to our targeted training, the tissues to be operated on are healthier, stronger and better supplied with blood. This promotes a faster recovery, allowing stable loading of the operated joint sooner. As a result, you return to your daily activities and sports faster and with less pain and discomfort.
Recovery counseling by Helix Physical Therapy: What can you expect?
During your recovery period, Helix Physical Therapy is here to support you. We come to your home to give practical instructions on moving within and around your home. You will also receive these advisories on video so you can watch them back or share them with family at any time. As soon as we can, we’ll start training focused on strength, stability and mobility, building on your pre-operative preparation. Our targeted exercise program and personal coaching will help you return to your normal activities and sports as quickly as possible.
Is physical therapy reimbursed by the insurer after these surgeries?
Helix Physical Therapy has contracts with all major insurers. After such operations, you are entitled to physical therapy from basic insurance for six months to a year, for everyone.
Basic insurance does have a deductible, and you pay for the first 20 treatments yourself, or they are reimbursed from your supplemental insurance. Thus, if you are insured for 14 treatments supplementary, you have to pay another 6 treatments yourself to get to the first 20 treatments. After this, it is reimbursed from the basic insurance.
It is important to check what specific terms apply to your insurance, including the deductible and the number of reimbursed treatments at the beginning of rehabilitation. Your therapist can help you identify this.

Preoperative and Postoperative Care
Optimal preparation prior to your surgery and proper aftercare are essential to getting the most out of your rehabilitation. At Helix Physical Therapy, we focus on a holistic approach to optimize your physical condition before surgery and to support a smooth and effective recovery after surgery.
Recovery after new hip
Recovery after total hip replacement is often characterized by initial pain and stiffness, which decreases as rehabilitation progresses. Physical therapy is crucial and often begins just days after surgery to restore mobility and strength. Full recovery can take several months, with many clients experiencing significant improvements in range of motion and pain relief within a few weeks.
Recovery after labral hip tear (tear in the hip capsule)
Surgical procedures to repair the labrum of the hip are done through an arthroscopic surgical technique; a minimally invasive procedure to expedite recovery. Recovery after a labral tear in the hip is often characterized by initial pain and stiffness, which decreases as rehabilitation progresses. Physical therapy is crucial and often begins just a few weeks after surgery to restore mobility, stability and strength. Full recovery often takes 6 to 12 months, with many clients gradually returning to their daily activities and sports.
Recovery after new knee
After total knee replacement, clients often experience painful stiffness, which improves with targeted physical therapy. The rehabilitation process focuses on regaining knee function through specific exercises that assist in bending and stretching the knee. Recovery can vary, but most clients can mostly resume normal daily activities within 12 weeks.
Recovery after Meniscus Surgery
Recovery after meniscus surgery depends on the nature of the procedure (repair versus partial removal). This surgery is actually always performed by arthroscopy. After surgery, there is generally mild pain and swelling. During rehabilitation, the focus is on restoring mobility, stability and strength through physical therapy. Clients can often return to athletic activities within a few weeks to months after surgery.
Recovery after Cruciate ligament surgery
Recovery from cruciate ligament surgery is a lengthy process that requires intensive physical therapy to restore strength and stability in the knee. This surgery is actually always performed by arthroscopy. Full recovery often takes 9 to 12 months, with clients gradually returning to full activity, including sports. Early mobilization and gradual build-up of load are crucial for successful recovery.
